Evaluation of Factors Associated with Mortality in Neonate's and Children Aged 1-59 Months in Dezful City (2009-2014)

Introduction: Since Neonate and children’s mortality is one of the most important health indicators in a country, this study aimed to determine the causes of death in Neonate and children aged 1-59 months in Dezful city.
Method: In this cross-sectional study, the death records of all 297 Neonate and children under 5 years during 2009-2014 were studied in the large hospital of Dezful. After assessing the validity of the researcher -made questionnaire, data was collected and analyzed with statistical software SPSS version 18 using Fisher's exact and chi-square tests for determine the relationship between the variables.
Result: Preterm borth at less than 32 weeks and birth weight of less than 1500 g were significantly found in the deceased children less than 1 year in this study (p < 0.001). The main cause of death in the study infants was respiratory disorders and the respiratory distress syndrome was the most frequent cause of death in these infants compared to other respiratory diseases (p < 0.001). Also, the most frequent cause of death among children aged 1 month to 5 years was associated with congenital disorders (p = 0.001), the most common cause of which was congenital heart disease.
Conclusion: The most frequent cause of death in children less than 1 year was associated with prematurity, low weight, and respiratory disorders. Furthermore, the most common cause of death among children aged 1 to 5 years was congenital diseases. Therefore, by investigating the causes of prematurity, low birth weight and congenital diseases in the children of the region, better planning can be done to reduce the relevant rates of mortality.
