Introduction: Internet addiction is a phenomenon that can disrupt the psychological and emotional processes of students. Despite the importance of this issue, the effectiveness of mindfulness-based psychotherapy interventions on it has not yet been adequately investigated. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of mindfulness-based reality therapy training on self-awareness and emotional self-regulation in students with internet addiction. Methods:This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test,post-test, a control group, and a three-month follow-up. Initially, 404 students were assessed using the Internet Addiction Test. Then, among individuals in the second and third quartiles of the research population (280 individuals), 34 participants were selected through simple random sampling (without replacement) and assigned to two groups of 17 participants, including an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received mindfulness-based reality therapy training for ten 90-minute sessions. The research instruments included Young’s Internet Addiction Questionnaire (1996), Cooper’s Self-Awareness Questionnaire (1997), and Hofmann and Kashdan’s Emotional Self-Regulation Questionnaire (2010). Result:An increase in self-awareness and emotional self-regulation scores, and consequently a significant decrease in internet addiction scores, were observed after the completion of the intervention program as well as at the follow-up assessment (P < 0.05). Conclusion:Mindfulness-based reality therapy is an effective approach for improving self-awareness and emotional self-regulation and ultimately helping students with internet addiction.
