Introduction: Cognitive emotional regulation disorder is one of the key problems in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which has negative academic, social, and emotional consequences. Considering non-pharmacological psychological interventions, the present study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of play therapy to strengthen executive functions and child-centered mindfulness to improve cognitive regulation in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Method: The research method was a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test-post-test and control group with a three-month follow-up. The statistical population of the study consisted of all 9-12-year-old boys with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in Sari counseling centers in 1404. A total of 45 children were purposively selected and randomly assigned to three groups of play therapy on executive functions, child-centered mindfulness, and control (15 people in each group). The cognitive emotional regulation questionnaire of Garnevsky et al. (2007) was used. The play therapy group received 12 45-minute sessions, the mindfulness group received 8 45-minute sessions, and the control group received no intervention. Result: Both interventions significantly improved children's cognitive emotional regulation (p<0.001). Also, the child-centered mindfulness intervention (η = 0.445) had a greater effect on executive functions (η = 0.180) than play therapy (p<0.01). These improvements were sustained until the end of the intervention. Conclusion: The combined application of executive function-based play therapy elements and child-centered mindfulness can fully improve cognitive-emotional regulation in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and provide practical guidance for designing individual-centered interventions in the area of emotion regulation.
