Introduction: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common behavioral disorders during childhood and adolescence. One of the challenges faced by this group is cognitive emotion regulation. The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of emotional schema therapy in improving cognitive emotion regulation strategies among adolescent male students with ADHD.
Methods: The research method was a quasi-experimental type with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group and a two-month follow-up period. The statistical population included all male high school students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder referred to the "Rahyab" Specialized Educational and Training Counseling Center in the academic year 2024-2025 who had a file in this center, of which 32 people (16 in the experimental group and 16 in the control group) were selected by convenient sampling. The collection tools were the Conners Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Diagnostic Questionnaire (1999) and the Garnefski & Kroaij Multidimensional Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (2006). The emotional schema therapy intervention was performed on the experimental group during 10 sessions, two 60-minute sessions per week.
Results: There is a significant difference in the mean scores of cognitive emotion regulation strategies between the experimental and control groups across the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up stages, and the intervention successfully improved cognitive emotion regulation strategies in the sample group (p < 0.01). Based on the calculated effect sizes, the impact was 0.61 on adaptive strategies and 0.52 on maladaptive strategies.
Conclusions: Given that emotional schema therapy was effective in improving cognitive emotion regulation strategies, this method should be considered by therapists and psychology specialists as an effective method.
Keywords: Emotional schema therapy, cognitive emotion regulation, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, students.
