The effect of parenting management training based on the Oregon Model on parenting adaptability and emotion regulation of mothers of children with behavioral problems: A quasi-experimental study.

Introduction: Findings in recent years show that children's behavioral problems have replaced physical illnesses as the main disability of middle childhood, which in turn poses serious challenges to mothers' psychological health and parenting practices. The present study aimed to determine the effect of parenting management training based on the Oregon Model on parenting adaptability and emotion regulation in mothers of children aged 9 to 12 with externalizing behavioral problems.
Method: The study was a quasi-experimental study in three stages: pre-test, post-test, and a two-month follow-up with a control group. The statistical population included all mothers with children aged 9 to 12 who referred to counseling service centers and school counseling centers in Isfahan in the winter of 1403. From the aforementioned population, 40 mothers were purposively selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and, after matching, were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups (20 in each group). Adaptability questionnaires (OAQ-Olson, 2006) and emotion regulation questionnaires (ERQ-Gross & John, 2003) were used to measure dependent variables. The experimental group underwent 12 90-minute training sessions, with a frequency of two sessions per week, and the control group did not receive any intervention. Data analysis was performed on 34 participants (17 in each group) using repeated measures analysis of variance.
Results: Parenting management training based on the Oregon model had a significant effect on improving the dimensions of parental adaptability and the dimensions of mothers' emotion regulation compared to the control group (P<0.05), but these effects were only on the balanced and disordered dimensions of parental adaptability and both dimensions of emotional inhibition and cognitive reappraisal of emotion regulation at the follow-up stage.
Conclusion: Parenting management training based on the Oregon Model can be associated with optimal management of children's behaviors by improving parental adaptability and appropriate emotion regulation of mothers, due to breaking the cycle of coercive parenting practices and negative child behavior. Therefore, the use of this training method is recommended to modify psychological constructs and parenting methods.
