Introduction: Hope and happiness are positive emotions that are opposite to negative emotions such as depression, anxiety, and despair, which makes it possible to strengthen these emotions, cause psychological dynamics, and improve children's performance. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effectiveness of the schema-based parenting package based on transactional analysis (TA) with parenting based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in mothers on the feeling of hopeness and happiness of preschool children.
Methods: The research was semi-experimental in three stages: pre-test, post-test and two-month follow-up with the control group. The statistical population was all the mothers of preschool children in Isfahan city in the winter of 2022 who have referred to counseling and guidance centers. For sampling, 54 mothers with children aged 3 to 6 years were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group (18 people in each group). Preschool children's hope questionnaires (PRCH-Sparks, 2021) and children's happiness (ACLQ-Axford, 1990) were used to measure dependent variables. Two educational groups were treated in 10 sessions of 90 minutes each, and the control group did not receive any intervention.
Result: Both parenting methods had an effect on increasing the feeling of hope and happiness of preschool children compared to the control group (p<0.001). According to the comparison of the difference between the averages of the two intervention groups and the control group, the schema-based parenting package based on TA had a greater effect on improving children's sense of hope and happiness than the ACT-based parenting (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The results of the research showed that the new schema-based parenting package based on TA can promote the positive emotions of preschool children through strengthening the inner happy child in parenting. Therefore, considering the lasting effect of both parenting methods on increasing children's positive emotions, their use in treatment and educational centers for families and preschool children can be considered.
