Introduction: Cyberbullying is increasingly spreading as an emotional problem among adolescents, who constitute the largest number of cyberspace users. The present study aimed to predict cyberbullying based on negative emotions and self-esteem in adolescents.
Methods: The present study is a descriptive correlational study. The statistical population included students studying in the first and second secondary schools of Mashhad in 1403-1404. Using multi-stage cluster random sampling, 380 people were selected as a sample and manually answered the questionnaires of the Cyberbullying-Victim Experience Scale (CBVEQ), the Leahy Emotional Schema Scale-Short Form (LESS-II), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Data analysis was performed using the Pearson correlation coefficient and linear regression analysis.
Result: The results showed that cyberbullying has a positive relationship with negative emotions (P<0.01, r=0.362), and a negative relationship with self-esteem (P<0.01, r=-0.348), and self-esteem has a negative relationship with negative emotions (P<0.01, r=-0.598). Based on the adjusted coefficient of variation, negative emotions and self-esteem can predict cyberbullying by up to 15% (R2Adj=0.154).
Conclusion: The present study showed that negative emotions and self-esteem can predict cyberbullying in adolescents. The findings of the present study can help educational professionals in creating educational programs to manage students' use of cyberspace and effectively manage emotions in school. Also, by implementing a program to monitor the prevalence of cyberbullying among students and identifying individuals at risk, they should refer them to counseling centers to increase mental health and prevent possible harm.
