Introduction: IV insertion is one of the stressors and painful sources for thalassemia children so achievement to pain relief methods in particular the use of none invasive methods is necessary .this study aims to compare the efficacy of acupressure and massage with ice in huko point on pain intensity of iv insertion in children with thalassemia.
Method: In this experimental research, 129 children 6 to 12 year’s old thalassemia childern selected and randomly divided into three groups. First group: acupressure, Group II massage and Group III ice massage. The control group received no intervention. Data collection included demographic questionnaire and Child Behavior Scale FLACC (Faces Legs Activity Cry Consolability Scale), respectively. Statistical data using Spearman and Kruskal-Wallis tests by SPSS version 22 was analyzed.
Results: The intensity of pain during and after the intervention in the group of acupressure and massage with ice was less than the control group significantly, (p=0.0001) There was no significant difference among the three groups in terms of demographic variables (P>0.05). Both acupressure and ice massage relieves pain during catheter insertion in children with thalassemia, but the impact ice massage was more (P <0.05).
Conclusion: Ice massage can reduce pain during iv insertion in children, Therefore, it is recommended that nurses are comfortable taking children as a basic requirement to use non-pharmacological methods of pain relief for children.
