Effectiveness of emotion regulation training on psychological well-being of Mothers of students with intellectual disability

Introduction: Mentally disabled child cause many psychological problems in family members especially on mother. Because the importance of Psychological well-being of mothers in family and society; the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of emotion regulation training on psychological well-being of mothers of students with intellectual disability.

Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 40 of mothers of mental retarded students, studying in Noor exceptional School in Arak city were selected through convenience Sampling. Then, Non-randomly, 20 of them were placed in experimental group and 20 others, were placed in the Control group. Mothers in experimental group received training emotion regulation and the control group did not receive any training. Training was performed eight sessions for experimental group. Subjects completed Psychological well-being Scale (84 questions form) prior and after the training. Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) was used to analyze the data.

Results: average of scores in psychological well-being variable and components, in experimental group and in post-test stage increased than control group (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The results showed that, Emotion regulation Training, improves psychological well-being of mothers with mentally retarded students.
